Affective Expression in Autism and Down Syndrome

by Andrea Bieberich and Sam Morgan, (1998) Jr. Autism and Developmental Disorders, 28, 333-338.

Our findings of a clear self-regulation deficit in autism is consistent with hypotheses based on recent cognitive and neurological research. Results of studies suggest that children with autism are not necessarily deficient in affective expression per se, but rather show deficits in the social cognition skills that help them in determining the appropriate timing and use of such expression (p. 337).
