An Invitation to Participate
The number of children and youths with Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism has increased rapidly in recent years. Nowadays there are more students with such a diagnosis in public schools than they were in the past. Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism, which both belong to autism spectrum disorders (ASD), pose a difficult challenge because of their complexity and variability among people. Although thousands of different studies have already been done on ASD more research is still needed to improve the quality of life of ASD individuals and their families. The research on girls with Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism is still sparse thus very needed.
In October 2010, the University of Warsaw in Poland in collaboration with the Autism Society of Washington in the USA is launching a research in Poland on girls with Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism. The research is focused on developmental history, cognitive profile, and social and language abilities of girls 13-18 years old with Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism. This is a multi-center, international research in collaboration with world renown experts on autism and Asperger syndrome like: prof. Mark Stokes from School of Psychology - Health, Medicine, Nursing, & Behavioural Science, Deakin University, in Australia; prof. Tony Attwood from Minds and Hearts Diagnostic & Treatment Clinic, in Brisbane, Australia; prof. Simon Baron-Cohen from Autism Research Centre, Cambridge University in the UK and the others.
Prof. Ewa Pisula from School of Psychology, University of Warsaw together with Agnieszka Rynkiewicz, MAT, MD from the Autism Society of Washington are leading the research in Poland. The research has a potential to improve both the diagnosis and services provided to this particular group of teenager girls.
We would like to invite both girls and boys with Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism age 13-18 and their families to participate in this study. At this moment we are starting to register the participants and they will be provided with a full description of the study. We also invite qualified in ASD psychologists and medical doctors in Poland to join this research.
